Waltzing With Midges
by Michael Gallagher
Now, Dan Paddy Andy was a Kerryman of note
So, to honour his celebrity, we all pushed out the boat;
A dancing tent was hoisted on Jimmy Roche’s lawn
And we waltzed with the midges in Lyreacrompane.
They came from every nation, from Japan and Singapore;
From France and Knocknagoshel and even Bangalore;
There were people there from Egypt, there were others from Saigon
And they waltzed with the midges in Lyreacrompane.
Now the Lyre midge is mighty, she is a special breed,
Her gnashers are like pincers, sure to make you bleed;
Skin will be skint and blood will be drawn
When you waltz with the midges in Lyreacrompane.
Heads they were ascratching and arms they were ascrapin,
But from the little suckers, there was no escapin;
To every nook and cranny, they most lustily hung on
While waltzing with the dancers in Lyreacrompane.
Well, Larry tuned his squeeze-box to a perfect pitch
But after a cupla polkas, shur he began to itch;
He dropped his melodeon; belted his bodhran
As he battled with the midges in Lyreacrompane.
Now Johnny he was tearin but Maggie was ecstatic,
They circumscribed her garter and they got above her lastic;
She tinkled and she tingled all night long
While waltzing with the midges in Lyreacrompane.
So if you feel like dancin, if you’re courtin or cavortin,
Come up to Stack’s Mountain, you’ll find the people sportin;
You’ll be rollin in the aisles and rockin until dawn
When you waltz with the midges in Lyreacrompane.
Waltzing with the midge
Waltzing with the midge
We’re all itchin
In Lyreacrompane.
